On 15th February 2023, a group of 8 of Vulcan’s finest took part in the Business Fives Charity Football Tournament in Sheffield, playing to raise funding and awareness for the Weston Park Cancer Charity (WPCC). This is an event where multiple companies from the region volunteer to take part and raise funds for their own nominated charity. This is a cause very close to Vulcan, with a number of our employees having benefitted from the great work of WPCC, and continuing to do so in the present day.
Our team of Rob Pearson, Luke Clarke, Lewis Swann, Matt Harrison, Ryan Briddock, Jordan Voyse, Jamie Butt and Elliott Groves headed down to Goals Sheffield with glory in their sights. This is an event where multiple companies from the region volunteer to take part and raise funds for their own nominated charity
This aim for glory hit a few roadblocks early on. Our 1st match, against Gravitate Accounting, started poorly, however, Vulcan showed great character, and nearly found a way back into the game. Just as our chairman, Gerry Quinn, arrived to cheer the team on, Rob Pearson played a wonderful through ball to Lewis Swann. Unfortunately, Lewis did his best Tom Daley impression at this point, much to Gerry’s dismay, and the opportunity was gone. Gravitate eventually ran out 2-0 winners.
Further close games followed against Whittam Cox Architects and Enzygo, but Vulcan came up short, due to the superior fitness of the opponents, missed chances, and some questionable refereeing decisions. As a result, we entered the lower bracket of the knockout phase of the tournament.
We eventually found ourselves in the L16 stage against Tribepad. Vulcan came out of the blocks quickly, and were rewarded with an early goal. Vulcan ran out 2-1 winners, sending us through to the quarter finals.
Unfortunately, this was a step too far for the Vulcan team, as illustrated by the fact that Rob Pearson was “feeling his age” at this point.
In total, the whole event raised over £3,400 with Vulcan raising over £1,000 towards that total. It was a brilliant day for the team and everyone involved. Massive thank you for all that was donated.
